Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) presented its medical awareness campaign – KNOW DIABETES once again by holding a three-day fair at Sunway Pyramid recently. Dedicated to shedding light on the prevention and management of diabetes in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, the campaign was underlined by the KNOW DIABETES fair, the release of an exclusive handcrafted socks collection by Komuniti Tukang Jahit (KTJ) with all proceeds benefitting the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, as well as a comprehensive diabetes e-guidebook.
The KNOW DIABETES campaign aims to enable greater understanding of diabetes by getting the public to ‘KNOW’ its prevention, as well as how to care for and control the health condition. This is in a bid to maximise the number of Malaysians who can say ‘NO’, be it to diabetes or its more serious complications.
Having previously achieved over 260,000 views in 2021 via a four-part webinar series featuring esteemed specialists and healthcare professionals from the Sunway Healthcare Group, SHG aimed to educate and engage with people from all walks of life and age groups at KNOW DIABETES Fair 2022, to underline that making simple changes in one’s lifestyle now may help avoid the serious health complications of diabetes in the future.
Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group said, “We are grateful for the response we received on the KNOW DIABETES campaign last year despite the COVID-19 restrictions and this year, we were delighted to be able to engage with participants at our booth in Sunway Pyramid. Malaysia has the highest prevalence of diabetes in Asia and one of the highest in the world, costing the nation approximately RM4.4 billion per year according to the Direct Health-care Cost of Noncommunicable Diseases in Malaysia report by World Health Organisation and Ministry of Health. Without proper understanding and management of the condition, we are at risk of reaching 7 million active diabetes cases or close to 1 in 3 adults by the year 2025.”
“With so many Malaysians being unaware of their risk of developing diabetes, I hope that this campaign continues to serve as a platform to educate and motivate Malaysians to take action towards preventing, managing and treating diabetes. Sunway Healthcare Group, along with the support of our multidisciplinary network, are prepared to help people with diabetes achieve and maintain good control of their condition so that they can continue to live their best life,” said Dato’ Lau.
Visitors to the KNOW DIABETES fair were able to participate in a range of fun yet educational activities, including a ‘Spin the Wheel’ game, fitness challenges by Celebrity Fitness and complimentary diabetes glucose testing by Sunway Medical Centre.
A series of contests were also held at the fair and will continue on SHG’s Facebook page, where participants can stand a chance to win prizes such as a RealMe Watch 2 Pro and an exclusive fine dining experience by a Michelin-stared chef at Sunway Resort worth RM900 for two.
Also premiering this year is the WDD Socks Collection, created in collaboration with KTJ to bring awareness to the impact of diabetes on five major areas of the body – the eyes, kidneys, nerves, feet and the heart. Available for sale at the fair with all proceeds going to the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, the socks were lovingly made by the skilled women tailors of KTJ, a local social enterprise dedicated to empowering B40 women of Malaysia via upskilling, training and sewing job opportunities to achieve financial independence.
The latest version of the diabetes management guidebook written by Dr Alexander Tan of Sunway Medical Centre Sunway City and Dr Lim Kim Piow of Sunway Medical Centre Velocity KL last year has also been released to better encourage awareness and education of diabetes in Malaysia.
